How are people in the Philippines reacting to rice prices and food shortages?

I heard that people in the Philippines are rioting because of the food shortages. Is this really true?

Are people really struggling more than ever because of food shortages there? And is there civil unrest among the people?

Yes. There are rumors that people will return to cannibalism.

there’s no food shortages, only inflation and minimum wage earners are the most affected one… there’s no civil unrest, only clamors for wage hike!

There are no riots - just long lines of people queuing to buy rice at goverment prices ( which is 25 - 30 % cheaper than commercial rice ).

There is no food shortage - just rising food prices.

April and May are rice harvest months. Expect a drop
in the selling price of rice by May or June.

    Have a nice day.

there is no food shortage and there is no civil unrest. here in the Philippines
the real scenario, is the price of rice soaring. ( hopefully will go down as summer rice harvest started already in some region)
the people are on the streets not because of food shortage, but because of resignation call to our president.

There is no food shortage. Your information is wrong, however, there is a rice shortage. People are protesting because of the increased price in rice but no rioting. We have not reached that part where the strongest and the fittest survive by ransacking stores or supermarkets. And it won’t happen, not here in the Philippines.

All of the response are pretty much on the money, there is no civil inrest. But no one has answered your question completely. For those less fortunate sure these people are struggling more and yes there is a shortage of rice in many of the provinces.

About the rice shortage question: Mass flooding in some areas of Eastern Samar, and Leyete have created serious problems in the provinces. Many of the rice crops have been ruined or severly damaged. This effect the overall rice production and cost. Many farming families are going hungry right now because they depend upon their crops for their lively hood. Because of this many farming families are eating less and depend more upon other family members working in the city to help them, Because the family members in the citys are helping their family members in the province, this means less money for them, Everybody is effected.
