Why do people answer a question by saying call a technician?

Obviously calling a Licensed Contractor is not on the minds of most people asking questions on this site. They are on here to find out if there is a alternative to calling and Electricain, Plumber, AC technician, Carpenter, Concrete finisher, etc…..

Why do so many people anwer a question with that stupid piece of advice? Duh….The only reason people are on her is to avoid the expense of calling the professional or to have some insight about their problem so that when they do call a pro they are not ripped off.

Who in the F*** does not know how to call a professional. Please quit answering questions with that stupid obvious answer.

Because sometimes what the people asking to do something that is obviously over their capability and these people should not attempt to do what they are asking about, otherwise they may either hurt themselves or damage property.
But, if that is not a good enough explaination, you could call a technician and ask them!

Two answers to your question. First is..they don’t know the answer and second is …2 points. Overall, I would rather see them tell people to call a technician (although I also **** this answer) than to give info that is more dangerous than the original problem.

    Because they get 2 points… =)

Actually, your attitude is worse than telling people to call a “technician”, especially when an answer defines what kind of person to call for that particular problem. Some people are so clearly ignorant of the complications that the only point of giving them a detailed answer would be to convince them they don’t know what they are doing and that wastes a lot of time.
Next time you will rant about telling people to turn off the power when anyone stupid enough not to know that shouldn’t be doing it.

Don’t be an idiot. A lot of times it is necessary to call an electrician, plumber, AC technician, carpenter, concrete finisher, etc. Often, a task/job cannot be completed with a hammer and a wrench, and a licensed professional should be called in. If you could please quit writing stupid stuff like this, it would be great.

alot of us know how to solve this problem, if we are there. when we tell you to call a pro it is for your own safety, the safety of others, or it is too complicated for the do it your self kind of job! we answer these questions to help and sending you to disaster does not help. grow up.

Because when somebody who apparently doesn’t even know which end of a hammer is the business end asks how to install a 240V line to run their dryer off of, the appropriate response is call an electrician, not to tell them to start monkeying around in the breaker panel. Just like in the Health category, where often the appropriate response is “see a doctor”.

Good question. I totally agree with you. Its for the points most of the time, cause they don’t know themselves. I also suspect some professionals say call a professional as a type of job security.
I’ve been in construction for a long time, and got into it for the purpose of learning for myself and to help my dad better renovate houses. There’s no better way to learn than doing it. Many times we’re doing an addition (professional job) and a homeowner asks us to change a light fixture in the existing house. I have taken them in and shown them how to do it, because people should know these things.
To be fair, sometimes its obvious people don’t have a clue by their question, e.g. “What kind of tape should I put on the thingy to keep the stuff in?”. But those people should be encouraged to look up what they’re talking about online or at the library and come back with a better, more specific question if they still have one. Some jobs are for the professional, but a lot of the time, this isn’t the case here.
There should be an attitude of “You can do it, we can help”, not “DON’T TOUCH IT”.

well then go ahead with your plans and get hurt, killed or harm family members because you were too ignorant to listen to advice…that simply meant for you to call a Qualified person since in most cases…ONLY a qualified person can do the job properly and safely and to code!

Your attitude is more a problem than people telling someone to call a technician. Obviously, some people do not know to call at tech or they wouldn’t ask the questions they do. Also, even though sometimes they might be able to fix the problem themselves, they might void the warranty on some pieces of equipment. HVAC equipment is a classic example. Most major manufacturers of HVAC equipment have in their warranties that it must be MAINTAINED and REPAIRED by a QUALIFIED TECHNICIAN.

Being cheap/thrifty, etc can sometimes wind up costing more money than the original repair would have costs.

If the only knowledge they get is from here they are still prime candidates for getting ripped off from unscrupulous contractors.
