Why do people think that others can control their mental illnesses?

If you think people with mental illness can control their thinking & behaviors, then why is it a mental ILLNESS?

It’s a struggle when people say I can control my OCD, Depression, Anxiety, & Tourette’s Syndrome as an excuse for not being able to function normally like other people.

I totally agree with you. I have been through this with people I know and it is a constant battle for them.

That’s like saying people can control diabetes by willpower. With mental illnesses, since people can’t see a difference, they think it’s not real.

They are ignorant. And chose to remain that way.

Most people think their ‘box’ is the only way. They put down anyone and every one that doesn’t fit in their box.

Too bad for them, they miss out on a lot of friendships and looking at life with a different view.

Hahaha! I’m there with you. I can control myself just fine when I’m balanced, okay when I’m so-so depressed, forget about it during major d, mixed, or manic. ***** being told just cheer up, calm down, concentrate, etc, etc, etc. At the same time, though, I don’t like the condescending attitude of, Oh, poor you… you can’t blah-blah because you are mentally ill.

People ultimately like being a victim- it keeps them with something to do..(sick. really.) that’s how i feel anyways. people start thinking in bad patterns when they are children- learning it from the adults around them, whatever.

I agree with you. People do not seem to not understand mental illnesses. Actually people refuse to understand mental illnesses.

The only way I can explain the way people are is: they would never tell a person with a broken leg to get up and walk but they will tell a depressed person, “just snap out of it.”

I don’t understand how so many people can be so ignorant.

I suppose the thing that bothers me most….is that a person with a mental illness will try, and self medicate themselves. It’s the ones who have the courage to acknowledge they have a problem, and get the help they desire. Those are the people I admire the most!

The only way to control is with the right medication.

Depends on whether you are you talking about people who have been diagnosed with a mental illness
    or//
are you talking about people who are just going through a hard time and struggling with problems who think they may have a mental illness and have self diagnosed?

Yes it’s hard to cope with when people don’t understand the facts that is why a proper diagnosis should be sought.
